Sankashti Chaturthi Rituals

1. Fasting (Vrat)

Devotees observe a strict or partial fast from sunrise to moonrise.

  • Only fruits, milk, or simple vrat-friendly food (like sabudana, peanuts, or potatoes) can be consumed.
  • The fast is broken only after seeing the moon and offering prayers to Lord Ganesha.

2. Ganapati Puja Vidhi

Before moonrise, follow these steps for performing the puja:

  • Clean the puja area and set up an idol or photo of Lord Ganesha.
  • Offer Durva grass, modaks, banana, and red flowers.
  • Light a diya (preferably with ghee) and offer incense.
  • Recite the following prayers:
    • Sankashta Nashana Ganapati Stotra by Narada Muni
    • Ganesha Ashtottara Shatanamavali (108 names)
    • Ganapati Atharvasirsha (if possible)

3. Moonrise Ritual

Once the moon rises, offer arghya to the moon:

  • Offer water, chandan, rice, and flowers.
  • Chant:
    • “Om Somaya Namah” or “Chandramase Namah”
    • “Om Gan Ganapataye Namah”
  • Break the fast after this offering.

4. Special Remedies Based on Intentions

Wish: Removing Obstacles

  • Offer 21 Durva grass blades and chant “Om Gan Ganapataye Namah” 108 times.

Wish: For Wealth and Prosperity

  • Offer modaks (especially jaggery & coconut ones) and chant the Lakshmi Ganapati mantra.

Wish: For Good Health

  • Light a ghee diya with camphor in front of Lord Ganesha and chant the Ganesha Mool Mantra.

Wish: For Marriage-Related Issues

  • Offer 5 types of sweets and red hibiscus flowers, and pray with full devotion.

Wish: For Career Growth and Exams

  • Write “Shree Ganeshaya Namah” 108 times and keep it in your pooja room.

Wish: For Removing Negative Energy

  • Perform a simple Ganapati Havan or chant Atharvasirsha 11 times with a diya and dhoop.

5. Donating and Charity

After your puja, it is considered meritorious to donate or perform acts of charity:

  • Donate food, clothes, or money to the needy.
  • Feeding cows or offering jaggery/grass is also considered meritorious.
